Autism NO OUT

April all over the world is a good, if not the best, moment to talk about the existence of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in society.Basically, I am not exactly sure, what makes things worse – underestimating all virtues of people of that kind and treat it like invisible, or creating limitations in all aspects of daily life. What is sad, people tend to do it all the time, no matter, how much effort is put into spreading the awareness. Since the number of people with ASD is rapidly increasing, we do need to open up our eyes.

For instance, in Poland 1 out of 100 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), whereas in USA it is about 1 out of 68. Although social disability does not seem to be as well-recognized as wheelchair or white cane, as well as doesn’t arouse pity as much as intellectual disability does, the number of restrictions still remain too great to be skipped. I am doubtless aware of the fact that autism, which is still mistaken for a kind of disease, has been discovered quite lately. Many of the theories about its aetiology still wait for their time to be confirmed or rejected, but on the other hand, scientists do know more and more about the autism spectrum disorder.

Even though the nature of autism is based on the difference in brain structure, due to the numerous side effects, often referring to the mental condition, sometimes psychiatric care is strongly recommended. Raising of awareness has its impact in ways of diagnosing and classifying autism spectrum disorder, which explains the appalling statistics of ASD. To my view, the thing is, we people find it hard to get used to another group of people demanding special care. It is so hard to catch up with the vastness of sufferers. That leads to the so-called social anaesthesia, which does not help to find under the blue flag. Talking and explaining requires time, which we never have too much.

I know that life amongst NT sometimes reminds driving on a roller-coaster. You can be lucky, ending up with higher level of IQ, as the compensation for some brain differences, so that having much more hope for normal existence. What if not? That’s just some shifted bricks, you say? Not really. Even so, it does not mean you should let it go at once. I am a strong supporter of the autism disenchantment and I am not going to give up.

Let’s say it loud: Autism no out. It will be a while for some people to get it, though.
